This unakkapavu saree with its red-gold border and subtle butta work is perfect for auspicious occasions like temple visits, small ceremonies, or cultural events. At Oppol, we take great pride in preserving these traditional weaving techniques while ensuring the highest quality of craftsmanship in every saree.
The bottom of the saree features a beautiful red border with gold zari work. This combination is highly auspicious in Kerala tradition. The red symbolizes prosperity and auspiciousness, while the gold kasavu (zari) represents wealth and abundance. This border style is what we call "kasavu kara" - a hallmark of Kerala's traditional textiles.
Notice how the border has a classic three-part structure - a central red band flanked by gold zari on both sides. This is a traditional temple-inspired border pattern that has been part of Kerala's textile heritage for centuries.
The small red vertical stripes you see on the body of the saree are what we call "butta" or "butti" - these are small decorative motifs that add subtle elegance to the otherwise minimalist white fabric.
Unakkapavu refers to the traditional method where cotton threads are hand-starched and sun-dried before weaving. No chemical starches are used, making it completely natural.

Story
She unfolded the Puliyilakkara Kasavu Saree, running her fingers over the delicate unakkapavu cotton, feeling the softness that spoke of generations of craftsmanship. The fine gold kasavu border, inspired by the tiger-claw (puliyilakkara) motif, shimmered subtly in the afternoon light. She imagined the weaver, carefully working for two days, threading tradition into each weave, ensuring this saree would not just be worn but cherished. This wasn’t just fabric; it was a legacy - one that carried the whispers of Kerala’s timeless artistry.
As she draped it, the saree fell effortlessly around her, light as air, regal in presence. It wasn’t loud, yet it commanded attention - a quiet confidence, just like her. In that moment, she realized she wasn’t just wearing a saree; she was embracing a story, a heritage, a piece of Kerala’s heart. And as she stepped forward, she knew - this saree was meant to be hers.
